INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES AND VIDEOS ENHANCE LEARNERS’ MENTAL WELL-BEING DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges for teaching and learning activities for both academics and students. Creating a positive and conducive learning environment, either physical or virtual, is essential for our learners. Evidence have shown that using inspirational quotes in teaching and learning facilitate positive academic functioning. The pedagogy of inspiring students promote feeling of comfort and ease enable students to be physically and mentally present, which allow meaningful and effective learning to occur, and ultimately enhance academic achievement. This paper evaluates the impact of using inspirational quotes and videos in prerecorded online lectures and student-teacher communication via WhatsApp. The quotes were posted before ,during and at the end of teaching sessions throughout the semester. The sample consisted of 94 students from a nursing and paramedic programs. A self-developed questionnaire was used to obtain feedback on this practice. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were applied. The overall findings showed that the integration of inspirational quotes and videos in teaching activities had a positive impact on students’ mind set and a mechanism to cope with stress in dealing with challenging learning needs during the pandemic.

Ms Teo Yan Choo is a nursing lecturer currently teaching at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS), UBD. She has almost over 3 decades of experience in nursing, midwifery and paramedic post registration education. She started her educational career in 1995, teaching Diploma and Post Basic Diplomas in Nursing programs With Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah, College of Nursing till 2009. Since Aug 2009 till present her teaching extended to GenNext Bachelor programmes and other disciplines both at the PAPRSB IHS UBD and School of Health Sciences, Politeknik Brunei. Various teaching and learning strategies and approaches are used in her teaching sessions to enhance the impact of learning objectives and outcomes.
Dr Hanif Abdul Rahman is a lecturer at the PAP Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Since 2018, he has been teaching biostatistics across health sciences disciplines and convening nursing academic modules. Currently, he is undertaking his post-doctoral training in University of Michigan, working on several data science and big data analytic projects. One of the projects was to predict the mental wellbeing of university students using machine learning techniques. The trained models could potentially be used to assist the higher education sector to develop an early detection and monitoring system to provide help to students in advance.
