Abstract

This paper reports a research project investigating the application of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in the Chemistry and English subjects involving year 9 and year 10 secondary students. This study first examines CLIL’s feasibility with these students. Next, the study explores students’ and teachers’ responses in terms of their acceptance towards CLIL. Finally, the CLIL’s educational outcomes are analysed using the qualitative content analysis and thematic analysis. Data collection instruments include questionnaires, interviews, teachers’ reflection notes and students’ work. This study confirms CLIL’s numerous claims to success which is supported by the positive learning outcomes yielded. It also validates the statement that CLIL is, after all, a concept. The notion of CLIL as a concept is further reinforced in the middle section of the research during the analysis stage. Coyle’s aspect of culture is shown to be forced and artificial. Fortunately, the data analysis stage revealed a more meaningful ‘C’; competence is more relevant in this research than culture. From the offset, it is expected that students would benefit from CLIL because the Bruneian educational system is already a potential CLIL environment, as bilingual education has been in place for 37 years. In a time when CLIL appears undoubtedly attractive with its extensive and ubiquitous presence worldwide and is even lauded as a panacea of 21st -century teaching and learning, this study has shown that CLIL is feasible if it is ever to be considered in the Bruneian educational field. However, the understanding of CLIL here is still in its infancy. Thus, for CLIL to be successful and sustainable, a strong foundation must be laid regarding teachers’ training and support, as CLIL teachers are expected to be experts in both content and language.
