Michelle Poh Wan Pei is a recent graduate under Masters of Teaching in Inclusive Special Education. Her research was inspired by her interest in reading, as she believes that every individual should have equitable access. As there are limited research on assessments and interventions in the Pre-Vocational Programme, Michelle hopes that her study would encourage more research on these areas.
Abstract
EFFECTS OF REPEATED READING ON THE READING FLUENCY OF STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES IN THE PRE-VOCATIONAL PROGRAMME
Strand: Pedagogy
The present study investigated the effects of adult-modelled repeated reading (RR) with error correction on the reading fluency and reading attitude of students with learning disabilities (LD) from the Pre-Vocational Programme (PVP). The quantitative analysis revealed no significant increase between the pre-test scores and post-test scores, the first reading and the final reading, and three RR and six RR on students’ reading fluency, respectively. However, large effect sizes were observed that indicated a strong relationship between adult-modelled RR with error correction on reading fluency. From the qualitative analysis, each student respectively showed an increase, no change and a decrease in positive reading attitude. Due to the small sample size that may impact the significance of the study, the study concluded that adult-modelled RR with error correction is effective to a certain extent. Students’ reading attitudes are then dependent on their performance within the intervention.
