Abstract

IMPROVING STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING OF AREA AND PERIMETER IN STEAM PROJECT BASED LEARNING

Strand: Pedagogy

This paper aims to show how Project Based Learning (PBL) applied to a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEAM) subject can improve Year 7 and 8 students’ understanding of Area and Perimeter. Students were given a STEAM challenge to design a blueprint of a dream home. An action research methodology was employed to evaluate the effectiveness of this PBL. The participants of the study consisted of 37 students aged between 12-14 years old. Pre-test and post-test responses on Area and Perimeter were analysed and focus group interview transcripts were analysed thematically. The result shows improvement of scores by 57% and the thematic analysis of the interview shows that PBL in STEAM can improve students’ understanding of Area and Perimeter.
